Principal's Corner - SME Happenings

This past winter principal Thomas Buzzell announced his resignation.  We advertised the position and then reached out to the community to find members for an interview committee.  We reviewed applications and selected individuals to interview.  We unanimously selected Katie Ahern for a second round of interviews.  Ms. Ahern then visited Samuel Morey for half a day.  As a result of very strong interviews and enthusiastic and positive reference checks, Ms. Ahern was offered and accepted the SME principal position for next year.

Rivendell Interstate School District is thrilled to announce the hiring of Katie Ahern as the next principal of Samuel Morey Elementary School commencing July 1, 2025.

Ms. Ahern has over 25 years of experience as an elementary teacher, college instructor and district level administrator. She began teaching a multiage class in Bethel, Vermont and later taught in Harford, Vermont.  She has worked at the Stern Center as an educational diagnostician and been a special educator coordinator, a college level program supervisor, and a Director of Student Support Services in Windsor, Wells River, Vermont, Keene State and Dartmouth College.

In addition to her formal roles Ms. Ahern has had a number of professional presentations and affiliations.  She has a bachelor’s degree from UMass Amherst, a master’s in special education from the College of St Joseph and post graduate work including PhD candidate work in teacher education from the University of New Hampshire and a certificate of study in advanced educational leadership from Harvard University.

Her work is characterized by a bubbly personality, getting down on the ground and reading with students, and enjoying bringing home baked cookies.  Ms. Ahern lives locally with her family .  When not relaxing or reading in her free time you can find her on the ski slopes!

She will have several meet and greet events, the first being on Thursday, April 17.

Please join us in welcoming Ms. Ahern to our community.
